John Roden Puts 8 Channels of Power-Q into Paul McCartney Monitor Mix
John Roden (remember him from our last edition?) famous monitor mixer to the stars (AC/DC, Ozzy, Black Sabbath) has chosen 8 channels of the Sabine Power-Q for monitor processing on the new McCartney tour. "I am intending to use them as an insert on the piano and vocal channels," comments Roden. "Paul will not let us midi up his piano and it has always been a bit of a monitor problem," he continues.

Roden intends to have 4 channels of Power-Q on the piano and 2 channels on the vocals. Questioned about the remaining two channels, Roden humourously sites the incredible versatility of the Power-Q will allow him to allocate one channel for "making triple shot lattes, with semi skimmed milk; and the other channel [for] making top shelf margaritas, no salt, on the rocks, for the after show beverage."

All kidding aside, the Power-Q™ Digital Workstation combines the functions of nine separate products into one easy-to-use 2U package. The 24-bit, two-channel Power-Q contains a Parametric EQ (up to 12 band per channel, with low and high pass filters), 31-band Graphic EQ with adjustable filter widths, full-featured Real-Time Analyzer, Compressor/Limiter, Delay, Noise Gate and 24 patented FBX Feedback Exterminator® filters (12 per channel). The Power-Q allows all functions to operate concurrently.

Roden and the Power-Q are old friends, having used it as a vocal insert when mixing for AC\DC, Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne. "The Power-Q is quiet and allows you to find the exact [feedback] frequency, narrow it down and not even notice the filter is in your system," Roden attests, "but you can notice the extra dB of gain it gives you."

Asked about the upcoming McCartney tour, Roden states, "I am confident that the Sabine Power-Q will once again make me look good."

Steve Yates Gets Satisfaction
Wolf Industrial Network's Steve Yates does it all, and gets great results from Sabine. "I take the customer from the initial sale, through systems engineering, programming, installation coordination, customer training and technical support," states Yates. "And when I'm with the customer, I know that Sabine quality and customer service are right there with me."

Wolf installs audiovisual systems and began using Sabine equipment in 2001. "The first time I used a Sabine product was in the corporate training rooms of a very well known financial services organization," recalls Yates. The rooms were approximately 40 feet by 70 feet, filled with desks and computer monitors, and were set up to allow instructors and guest speakers good wireless mobility while addressing the classes. "Keeping the quality of the sound good — and of course, feedback free — were very important considerations in the sound system design of this room," states Yates.

"Support with Sabine is fantastic. At Sabine you can get someone to answer your questions and really listen to what you have to say."

Sabine Graphi-Q GRQ-3102S

"Originally, I was looking for two separate pieces: an EQ and a feedback controller," he remembers. "Sabine's Sales and Technical Support team guided me through the process of deciding which unit best fit my purposes — which ended up being the Graphi-Q 2-channel remote-control-only GRQ-3102S." Yates states that "the price was right and the functions fantastic — I absolutely fell in love with the Graphi-Q!"

Q-Tips
Stereo EQ with the Graphi-Q
Situation: Using one channel of his Graphi-Q, Johnny Goldenears sets up just the right EQ curve and compression for the left side of his production sound system. Now he wants to apply those settings to the other channel, and he wants to do it quickly. “Can’t I just copy them?,” says our erstwhile mixer. “And then I would like the unit to act like a stereo EQ.” Can Johnny do it?

Solution: Yes, indeed he can. Johnny chose the Graphi-Q because it is a digital EQ with analog controls, but he still wants the benefit of repeatability that a digital product can provide. With the Graphi-Q you can copy settings from one channel to another in two ways.

Method 1 — From the front panel: Turning the two-channel GRQ-3102 into a stereo EQ is simple. Pull all the faders on the A channel down to their lowest positionand now the B channel is the master for both channels. All EQ adjustments made in the B channel are applied to the A channel, too. In addition, the compressor, high & low cut filters, and output gain of both channels are linked. The delay, bypass, and FBX Feedback Exterminator controls remain channel specific.   Graphi-Q with A Sliders down

Method 2 — With GRQ Remote Control Software:The concept is the same when using the software, but here you have more choices and more flexibility. In this case use the main screen to edit the EQ settings of one channel in the Graphi-Q. Then choose Link table from the Options Menu and set a link between the two channels. Setting the link properly will copy the settings from one channel to another.   Graphi-Q Remote Control Software Link Table

Links are created by typing in two characters into the appropriate function field of the selected Graphi-Q (you can be controlling up to 8 units). The first character is the type of link, A for Absolute and R for Relational. The second number names the link and allows you to distinguish it from other links. If we want to copy the settings from one channel to another, we use the Absolute link. The first channel you set to an Absolute link becomes the master, and is shown in red. In this case all values for that function are exactly the same for all linked channels, and they match that master channel. If we choose Relational, any changes made after linking are made proportionately to both channels, maintaining independent values for each function (no master).

In the example shown, Johnny entered A1 in both channels of his GRQ-3102 and got his wish. The Link table is a very potent tool. You can link the graphic EQ, parametric EQ, compressor/limiter, delay, output level, and global parameters of up to 16 channels of Graphi-Qs. We’ll take a look at global parameters in a future SABINE-zine.
